COFFEE SHOP PROMOTION
(COVER SHOT SHIRLEY YU)
Wednesdays are review days for my students. I am up at 5 AM and uploading the images to take a look at them before I get into the live critiques that start at 9 AM sharp and continue on through about 12:30 PM. Three classes an hour in length back to back.
Watching these photographers begin to grasp concepts that will drive their photography higher and higher is one of the true joys of being where I am now.
I did this stuff for over 50 years, so I feel I can add a bit of context to the teaching of the techniques.
We approach it from two sides: the technical lighting and composition and such, and the art of working for someone else – understanding layouts, creating concepts, and working with clients under stress.
Today was “coffee shop ad” review day and a few of these images were so cool. One of these photographers is a pro, the others are new but coming along so fast it is mind-boggling. Can you see the pro’s work?
This is only their third assignment, so I am eagerly awaiting the work that they will be producing a few months in.

OWN YOUR CREATIVE EDGE – ESCAPE “GOOD ENOUGH”
Where the magic is. One of the things I see too much of is “like them” shooters cloning or borrowing heavily from other photographers in order to create a faux style of their own. What may even be worse is the group of photographers who are presenting...

TEN THOUSAND HOURS? LET'S REEXAMINE WHAT THAT MEANS IN A PRACTICAL SETTINGBy now we are all familiar with Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000-hour rule from his pop-psychology book, Outliers. It was actually discovered by K. Anders Ericsson in his investigation of...
HAVE YOU EVER STOPPED YOURSELF FROM TAKING A PHOTOGRAPH BECAUSE OF WHAT SOMEONE ELSE WOULD SAY?
Have you ever stopped yourself from taking a photograph? And then thought later “I should have taken that shot”! The excuses and reasons abound for not taking a photograph that presents itself to you. Not the right time Not the right lens. Not exactly what I had in...
WHY I DON’T HATE UNSPLASH
For those of you who do not know, Unsplash.com is a website where users can post their images for other users to download and use for any project of any type. Free images. Absolutely and without strings. And so many photographers are so very pissed about it. Me... not...
DISRUPTERS ARE DISRUPTING THE DISRUPTION
Hulu aggregated TV and Movies into a streaming service that operated just like TV. Netflix took the model of the corner video rental store and put it online. Both started by presenting work already created. Amazon came in and made access to...
